Is Groupon Killing Local Businesses? Good Article

Groupon Customers
Groupon is very likely one of the fastest growing startups in history. There’s no denying how ably the company took popular trends by the reigns and molded them into an innovative and undeniably industry-changing service. And it’s easy to see why other businesses are quick to jump on board. The site says its subscribers are “one of the largest, most desirable audiences for any business – and one of the hardest to reach with traditional advertising.”
While the company’s got its demographics down pat, it fails to bring attention to the bigger picture effect it’s had on local businesses. And Groupon isn’t the only one to blame: We’re officially in the thick of deal-a-day culture – the knock-offs are too many to count and multiplying every day – and your average consumer’s purchasing habits could be described as hyper-local. But is Groupon the rising tide that lifts all boats, or the tsunami that sinks them?

Temple of poi grouponIt doesn’t work for everybody

If you’re a local business owner, there’s almost an expectation to use Groupon. There are too many success stories and statistics to ignore – but unfortunately it is not a catch-all. Isa ‘Glittergirl’ Isaacs owns and operates Temple of Poi, a fire dancing studio in the Bay Area. Isaacs explains her two Groupon offers were “super effective at getting me exposure in a mainstream market that I didn’t normally have exposure in,” but realized that many of these new customers were “window shoppers.” According to Isaacs, more than a few customers who purchased the Groupon weren’t all that interested in poi, and were more drawn to the idea of adding an experience to their resume, or simply attracted to the savings and not the product. Needless to say, these people didn’t become returning customers.
Despite her focus on clarifying the expiration terms of her Groupon deal, Isaacs found that customers either called the first day or within the last two weeks of the coupon’s availability – a difficult timetable for a one-woman business to function on, considering classes cap at eight people. While Isaacs could schedule additional classes to satisfy user demand, she notes this isn’t possible for many businesses that defer to Groupon or similar services. Product-oriented business have a harder time meeting demand than service-oriented businesses do, something many of Groupon’s larger faux pas can be attributed to. Earlier this year, the site was overwhelmed with orders of a Japanese New Year’s meal that left many users demanding refunds.
Stuart Wall is the CEO of Signpost, an alternative to Groupon. Wall says that businesses with high margins have a big disadvantage when it comes to using Groupon. “If you’re a business where you can hit a max, you get in trouble with Groupons.” He notes that if you’re running a new business and need that initial influx of customers, the site will work for you: “For a subset I think it’s a great solution.” But for those that operate at peak situations – restaurants in particular – you risk cannibalizing your existing clientele.
Associate professor of management at Rice University Uptal Dholakia has spent 10 years studying online marketing issues and has been researching daily deal sites and their economic impact for the last eight to 10 months. He describes their very sudden popularity as a mania that has taken consumers by storm, and he realized there simply hasn’t been enough attention concerning how they are actually affecting businesses. Dholakia recently published a study assessing this very issue and determined that Groupon can be a benefit for business owners – as long as they do their research.
“Something like Groupon comes along, and [business owners] have really no idea what the potential loss or gain is,” he says. “A number of businesses just jump in without really thinking about what they are trying to accomplish.” Taking into account variables like customer caps and whether or not a deal should be exclusive to new customers is vital, Dholakia cautions, and business owners need to ask questions to find a deal with the most earning potential.

There is ALWAYS a Chance...

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Dwight "Hound Dog Man" James of Memphis TN for giving us another heroic StarlinesUSA Friday Happy Hour tale to tell.

Yesterday, Friday afternoon, Dwight was 212 miles away from his home. He was field training a brand new StarlinesUSA Clo
ser-to-be in Nashville TN. Dwight was lighting up his cell phone with a big hunk of burning calls but was still without close at 3PM. Time to jump on I40 South and call it a day? No way, Dwight will not quit without taking care of business.  Our boy stayed on the phone, got an appointment and closed a big Starkart sale at 3:45PM EST. Right before Happy Hour Dwight grabbed about $1,000.00 in STARka$h!!  An earned reward for not cutting and running when the going got tough.

Cheers to Mr. Dwight James for his sensational accomplishment and for asking the customer, "So you're sayin there's a chance?!?"

Who Let the Dogs Out?!?

Please join me in congratulating all of our StarlinesUSA Closers who are taking big-time advantage of the Starkart auto renewal program. Last week we paid out more STARka$h in auto renewal commissions than any previous cycle. Many of our Big Closers earned well over $10,000.00 a year in  auto renewal dividends alone. That's rent or a house payment, or an unforgettable weekend in Vegas.  Because we all know what happens in Vegas...

A Little Snow Never Gets Us Down

TemperatureTodayAverageHistorical Range
High29 °F46 °F24 to 73 °F
Low13 °F31 °F8 to 55 °F

Greetings StarlinesUSA Closers and special friends:

Sleet and snow...no problem
Icy roads... no worries!
Wind chill near zero... so what?
A hour drive... I am on it

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Mike Frazier of Louisville KY for overcoming Mr. Winter and having a huge STARka$h day. Now, Mike's first material love is his Porsche. However, today he left the German Rockit in the garage and sped around frigid Louisville in his Land Rover.

While most surrendered to the elements and hunkered down in their homes, Mike was racing around Kentucky like Junior Johnson in a 49' Ford packed with a supercharged Cadillac engine and a trunk full of Kentucky moonshine! Today Mike closed two Starkart contracts for a total of $6565.00. Mike did not tell me how much STARka$h he grabbed, but I'm sure it was easily a $2000.00 trunk load...and he didn't have to out run any Federal Agents!!

Cheers to Mike, Junior would be proud of your STARka$h run.

Lightning Strikes...and it pours STARka$h!!

Greetings StarlinesUSA Closers and special friends

It was less than three weeks ago, that I was pumped about telling you: "believe it or not it is possible to close four brand new Starkart sales in one day..." Believe it or not, lightning has struck again, this time in Atlanta Georgia today!!!

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Steve "The Alabama Slammer" Thomas for his miraculous day. The Slammer and I have been working together since 1990; so just when I thought I had seen it all, he pulls this out of his bag of tricks. Steve is old-school, he goes out and walks and knocks on doors. In addition, he does not use any electronics in his sales presentation...just a Starkart pitch book and Starkart samples. So today, going door-to-door in an Atlanta GA suburb, he closed; 1) an insurance agent; 2) an auto body shop; 3) a performance auto shop and 4) an Italian restaurant. Plus, he had closed a computer repair shop at 5PM the night before. What a great run!! The Slammer grabs well over $3,000.00 in STARka$h without ever picking up the phone.

Ho Ho Ho - A Sleigh Full of StarKa$h for Christmas

Holiday Greetings StarlinesUSA Closers and special friends:

Yes, it is possible to close new sales during the Holidays!

It is even possible to close new two sales in one day.

Amazingly, it is even possible to close new three sales in one day.

Believe it or not, it is now possible to close four brand new sales and earn a sleigh-full of STARka$h in one amazing pre-Christmas selling day!! Mr. Matt ( now known as the Rock God of StarlinesUSA) Coffel of Scottsdale AZ did it today.

Today it was 78 degrees here in the Valley of the Sun and a frigid 38 in Payson AZ. Matt has well over $6,000.00 STARka$h going into his account this week from 2 monster Starkart closes he made a week earlier...so he is already cashed up for a holiday trip home to Indiana and then to Marco Island FL for New Years. So, Matt could have easily rescheduled for after the 1st and hit the pool. Instead he made the 97 mile drive up the Bee Line Highway and got busy.

First, he closed a realtor and grabbed $1935.00 STARka$h commissions.
Second, he closed a dentist and snatched $1535.00 STARka$h.
Third, he closed a vet and scooped another $740.00 STARka$h.
Forth, he closed another dentist and pocketed $1535.00 STARka$h.

$5745.00 STARka$h commissions... and he will have it all in his bank before Christmas!

Cheers to the Rock God, Matt Coffel.  I have been selling ads in grocery stores back before Santa's beard turned white and I have never seen a better Holiday Closing achievement than this. Wow.

Happy Holidays to all,

Nick hits a homerun, and slides into piles of Starka$h

Nick Roberts sold a Starkart contract to the Cleveland Indians to promote their Cactus League schedule. Cheers to Nick on his cool sale...and his big handful of STARka$h.

The Power of Online Video for Small Businesses

Today, a local business not having an effective Commercial Video on YouTube is reminiscent of not having an ad in the yellow pages back  in the day!!

Video results are becoming increasingly common in Google's search results. Your videos stand a much better chance than your text web pages site of being shown on the first results page. On the keywords for which Google offers video results: a video has about a 50 times better chance of appearing on the first page of results than any given text page in the index.

YouTube now has 2,600,000,000 daily visitors! YouTube has now surpassed Yahoo, AOL, Bing, etc to become the #2 search engine on the web behind Google.

There are hundreds of new articles stating just how effective videos are in helping local businesses.  Here are a few, and we will post more in our next blog.

So remember, if your video is not online, your business will NOT be found.

"The Alabama Slammer" grabs Starka$h right in time for the weekend

Greetings StarlinesUSA Closers and special friends:

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Steve "The Alabama Slammer" Thomas of Atlanta GA for his Friday afternoon StarlinesUSA Happy Hour achievements.

Steve has been working the mean streets of Atlanta Georgia now for about a year. As you can imagine, there are lots of poor neighborhoods where selling anything to anybody is difficult. Steve needs to works long hard hours walking door-to-door in humid summers and cold Georgia winters to keep the STARka$h flowing. Plus, the commute traffic in Atlanta metro is brutal. It is not uncommon for Steve to drive 90 minutes to and from the area is he working.

So on Friday afternoon at 2:30PM ( almost happy hour), it would have  been easy for Steve to knock-off after a sale to his doppelganger ( John E. Thomas) and drive to his home in East Atlanta...about a hour away. Instead, he walked door-to-door for another 2 hours with no results; seems like most of the owners had already tossed it in. As he began heading home, he spotted a plumbing truck. He recognized the name of business because he had walked into the plumber's shop the day before and the owner was not in. Here's where the story gets good!! Steve turned around and followed the truck back to the shop and hailed the owner down in the parking lot!! "I've only got a few minutes but I'll take a look at what you got" . Bingo! Steve closed the Starkart sale and grabbed an additional $535.00 STARka$h at 5:25PM during the peak of the StarlinesUSA Happy Hour.

Cheers to The Alabama Slammer for his happy hour success.

Jim
